Staycation in South Georgian Bay
Have a staycation in South Georgian Bay! This year looks a little bit different for everyone, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a summer full of fun and adventures. Enjoy your own backyard and play a tourist for a few days in South Georgian Bay. We have created an itinerary for an ideal weekend packed full of activities, shopping, and eating. You might just forget you’re a local!
After a long week, it’s time to lay back and relax in the sun. Read a book, play games, swim, or just enjoy the beautiful views of the water and mountains across the bay. Buy a day parking pass which is $18 on weekdays and $21 on weekends (valid from 8am-10pm). Or buy a seasonal pass for $125 which is valid until Thanksgiving – so you can enjoy the beach as much as you want this summer! For up-to-date COVID-19 information on Wasaga Beach, please visit their website here. After a relaxing day on the beach, grab some dinner at the Iron Skillet and enjoy their patio. If you have a sweet tooth, make sure to get some after dinner ice cream at Mr. Norm’s Nephew.
Start your day off on the right foot by having a fueling breakfast at Giffen’s Country Market which is currently offering takeout. Bring your breakfast to one of the beautiful parks in the areas, such as: Centennial Park and Clearview EcoPark in Stayner or Gowan Memorial Park and Mad River Park in Creemore. Next, take a walk in downtown Creemore and browse the shops. Or if you’re interested in learning more about the history of the area, take part in the self-guided walking tour. This historical walking tour of Creemore has plaques around the village with information about the founders and influential people that travelled there (such as Samuel de Champlain in the early 1600’s).
For lunch, get an assortment of cheese, meat, bread, dips, antipasto, and more from Dags and Willows! Or order pickup from their weekly menu that includes marinated salads, different main courses, and wine. Take your food and have a picnic! If you’re not tired of shopping, make your way to downtown Collingwood and check out all the stores. Next, have dinner at Lakeside Seafood and Grill which has a great patio on the water. Lastly, end your day by going on a boat tour with Collingwood Adventures Voyages. The sunset cruise is 1.5 hours and takes you by the Collingwood Terminals and Nottawasaga Lighthouse. Bring a group of up to eight people on this cruise.
Have a delicious brunch at the Oliver and Bonacini in Blue Mountain Village. Then, you can go for a hike up Blue Mountain. Make sure to buy a Play All Day Pass online or at Activity Central so you can hike or partake in other activities at the Village. If you don’t feel like hiking, make your way over to Thornbury’s downtown and browse through the shops. Then, head over to Georgian Hills Vineyards for a wine sampling and tasting menu which lasts 30 minutes and is available every half hour, Wednesday to Sunday 11am-5pm. You can also place an order at least 24 hours before for a picnic. Georgian Hills Vineyards has partnered with Roadrunner Foods, The Pop Up Event Company & The Print Shop in support of Home Horizons and the work they do with local, homeless youth. You have three choices – Backyard BBQ Picnic, Vineyard Picnic, or Georgian Bay Surf & Turf Picnic. You can also arrange your wine to pair with the picnic. Pick up the picnic at Georgian Hills Vineyards or the YMCA parking lot and sit anywhere at the vineyard or take it somewhere else to eat. All proceeds go to Home Horizon.
Take an evening stroll around Memorial Park. Walk around the water and enjoy the views of the area. Next, order takeout or sit outside on the patio at the Leeky Canoe in downtown Meaford. Enjoy the last dinner of your staycation!
There is so much to offer in the area! While we can’t travel far this summer, take advantage of your backyard and shop, eat, and participate in local activities. Enjoy your staycation in South Georgian Bay!
