Biking in South Georgian Bay is the perfect activity to plan a spring trip around. Spring is a beautiful time in South Georgian Bay with apple trees blooming, the water warming, and the patios coming to life.
Arrive Friday afternoon and check into Penny’s Motel in Thornbury. This boutique hotel is the perfect location for access to bike rides and amenities, located just off the Georgian Trail and a short distance from the shops and restaurants of Thornbury. Enjoy games in the courtyard and marshmallows over the open fire pits before heading to their Après Bar for dinner.
Rise bright and early on Saturday and depart on your bike tour of the Old Mail Road. Challenge yourself on this loop with hill climbs and descents as you transport back into another time through welcoming communities filled with tasty food stops, galleries and opportunities to further explore the Beaver River. This route features quiet back roads, farmers markets, orchards, peddle and paddle excursions and small town history, like the Old Mail Road. This used to be the primary route for travelers via slow moving stage coaches in the bygone era of the 1800’s. View a map of this route on our Four Season Guide.
Note to Riders: Some paved and unpaved roads. Caution on Grey Rd 7, Grey Rd 13 and roads through Clarksburg and Thornbury, limited paved shoulders, high speed traffic. Some steep hills to climb and descend, take shorter loop to avoid more challenges. Old Mail Road unpaved with some loose gravel, but very scenic, historic and quiet.
Take a quick detour and end your ride at Spy Cider House and Distillery. Enjoy all that Spy has to offer while you sit on their outdoor patio with a view of acres of budding apple trees.Once back in Thornbury and freshened up, walk to Sterling’s Restaurant at the base of the main street in Thornbury and overlooking the marina. Watch the sun set over Georgian Bay while you enjoy their gourmet menu and expansive wine list.
Sunday morning, take a ride down to Bruce Street and take your pick from an abundance of coffee shops on every side. Cross the bridge on Arthur street to see the Thornbury Fish Ladder!
From here you can choose your own adventure; there is so much to see and do. Follow the river down to Georgian Bay. Get on the Georgian Trail or ride down to Bayview Park, both showcasing beautiful views!
