Blackburn Blue Mountain Village

Great great grandfather came to Canada to escape slavery

The Blackburn brother’s great-great-grandfather Elias Earls traveled the Underground Railroad from Kentucky in the 1800s to its northern terminus, Owen Sound, Ont., where he married a local woman, Sarah Woods. They were the first mixed-race couple in Owen Sound. For over 50 years Bobby Dean Blackburn, the brother’s father, and legendary R&B entertainer have played tribute to their heritage and performed at the annual Emancipation Festival in Owen Sound, a picnic celebration spanning the past 150 years..
