3 Days in South Georgian Bay: A Weekend Itinerary for Families

Looking to plan a fun weekend in South Georgian Bay for you and the whole family this summer? Check out this action-packed itinerary covering everything from accommodations, to food recommendations, and activities (both indoor and outdoor) to keep the kids busy!

Friday Afternoon

Arrive in Collingwood on Friday afternoon and check into the Georgian Bay Hotel for a comfortable, kid-friendly stay for the weekend. Located just off Highway 26 between Collingwood and the Blue Mountains, this is a great central spot to be. The kids are sure to stay busy with access to the playground, heated saltwater indoor and outdoor pools, as well as the seasonal sports equipment.

Kick things off with a family walk on the Georgian Trail. After being stuck in the car for a couple of hours, this is the perfect activity to get some fresh air and move your body. This family-friendly trail is excellent for all ages due to its primarily flat terrain. Although the Georgian Trail does span 34 kilometers from Collingwood to Meaford, the trail ventures through different parts of downtown Collingwood and into the Blue Mountains for a much shorter walk closer to your accommodations. Check out downtown Collingwood and access the starting point behind First Street at Harbourview Park or pick up the trail just steps outside the Georgian Bay Hotel.

Friday Evening

Stay in Collingwood for the evening to relax and unwind after a long travel day. Check out patio or indoor dining at Northwinds Brewhouse & Kitchen on First Street. A brewery doubling up as a restaurant calls for a variety of delicious appetizers, salads, burgers, fish, and more, along with delicious beer flights and cocktails. Check out the online menu here.

It wouldn’t be a trip to South Georgian Bay without actually being on the Bay, of course! Finish off the night with a sunset boat cruise with Collingwood Charters. This incredible opportunity to watch the sunset from the open waters of Georgian Bay is an experience you don’t want to miss!

Saturday Morning

Start off your Saturday by heading west along Highway 26 to the town of Meaford. This 25 minute drive follows along the edge of Georgian Bay, offering picturesque views for the duration of the trip. Stop in at Grandma Lambe’s on the outskirts of Meaford to check out this well-known, old-fashioned country market. Grab a pastry for breakfast or a treat to save for later! If you’re lucky enough to visit during apple season (August to October), enjoy a delicious apple straight from the Grandma Lambe’s orchards.

Once you arrive in Meaford, head to McCarroll Park to enjoy a low-key morning with the family. Let the kids burn off some energy at the playground and cool off in the Apple Splash Pad, or at the small, shaded beach across the road. On the way back, take the opportunity to grab a bite to eat in Thornbury’s charming downtown which offers great local shopping and dining options.

Saturday Afternoon

Head to Blue Mountain Village for a fun, action-packed afternoon. Check out the variety of thrilling attractions they offer, including the Ridge Runner Mountain Coaster, Lumber Lanes Climbing Centre, Timber Challenge High Ropes, Woodlot Low Ropes, and Wind Rider Triple Zips. Looking for activities suitable for smaller children? Check out the Canopy Climb Net Adventure, Chutes and Loops Ball Adventure, or the Plunge! Aquatic Centre. Want to do it all? Purchase Play All Day tickets to have unlimited access to all of these activites (and more!) for the entire day!

Saturday Evening

Stay in the Village to eat dinner at the foot of the Mountain at one of the many dining options. Walk around to check out the little shops and even enjoy live music in the heart of the Village. Check out the live music schedule here. Tap into your creative side and head over to Crock A Doodle. Paint your own pottery to take home as a keepsake so you always have something to remind you of your family trip to South Georgian Bay.

Travel back to the Georgian Bay Hotel, only 10 minutes from Blue Mountain Village, to catch some Z’s after a full day exploring South Georgian Bay. Rest up for another fun-filled day tomorrow!

Sunday Morning

Wake up, check out of the hotel, and travel roughly 20 minutes outside of Collingwood to the little town of Creemore. This quaint downtown full of local art, shopping, and dining is a must-see. Pick up delicious takeaway breakfast made-from-scratch at the Bank Café before heading to Purple Hill Lavender Farm. Located on the rolling hills under 5 minutes from the village of Creemore, this family-owned lavender farm is the most serene location to kick back and relax. Pack a picnic, take photos, enjoy the gorgeous views, and explore the 2.5 kilometre hiking loop.

Sunday Afternoon

What better way to finish off your mini-vacay than by soaking up the sun on the beach? Make your way to Wasaga Beach and experience all that the world’s longest freshwater beach has to offer! With 14 kilometres of sand and 6 different beaches, there’s sure to be something for everybody. If you’re looking for shopping and dining options right on the beach with more action and energy, check out Beach Area 1 and 2. If you’re wanting something a little quieter and more relaxing, Beach Areas 3-6 might be a better fit. Wherever you end up, be sure to spend the afternoon swimming and playing in the sand!

Sunday Evening

After a laid back afternoon, conclude your stay with a little action at Skull Island Mini Golf or Wasaga 500 Go-Karts. Whether you feel like playing a round of pirate-themed mini golf, or racing on the speedway, you are sure to spark up some fun, family competition before heading home. Safe travels and we hope to see you again soon!
